Alenka graduated with first class honours from Monash University, Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 2005, and completed a Post-graduate Diploma in Surgical Anatomy at The University of Melbourne in 2007, as dux of the year.

Since receiving her FRACS, Alenka has chosen to further refine and develop her skills in the subspecialty areas of aesthetic and paediatric plastic surgery. She has been supported by scholarships from the Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Fellow Scholarship) and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (Morgan-Opie Travel Scholarship) in order to undertake competitively appointed Australian and international fellowships.

Her Advanced Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Fellowship with the Melbourne Institute of Plastic Surgery in 2015 allowed her to gain extensive experience in the fields of aesthetic and reconstructive surgery, particularly in the areas of facial aesthetic surgery, breast surgery, abdominoplasty and body contouring surgery.

Alenka extended her proficiency in nasal reconstruction and aesthetic and functional rhinoplasty through time spent at the renowned Klinik für Plastische Gesichtschirurgie Marienhospital in Stuttgart Germany, in 2016, and in general aesthetic plastic surgery at the Velthuis Kliniek, Rotterdam, The Netherlands, in 2017.

Alenka’s expertise in paediatric plastic surgery and cleft surgery was further enhanced through training as a Clinical Fellow in Cleft Surgery at the South Thames Cleft Service, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, London, United Kingdom, and at Erasmus Medical Centre, Rotterdam, The Netherlands, as the Dutch Association for Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (DAFPRS) Fellow.

Since returning to Australia in 2018, Alenka has held appointments as a consultant Plastic Surgeon at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Western Health hospitals and the Royal Melbourne Hospital. She is an accredited medical volunteer for Operation Smile and donates her time and surgical expertise in cleft surgery during charity Mission trips to areas of need.

Alenka’s passion and dedication to her chosen vocation is clearly evident. Balanced with her love for her family and own children, she strives to translate this into an excellent, contemporary and caring service for all her patients.

Skin Cancer Removal Reconstruction

For many Australians, skin cancer and the risk of skin cancer are all too familiar subjects. Australia may be renowned for its sun-kissed complexions and love of the outdoors but the majority of the population have not been born with skin types designed to cope with the effects of the sun.

Removal of Non-Cancerous Spot

Non-cancerous spots generally present themselves as moles or blemishes on the skin. Babies are highly unlikely to be born with moles as they appear during childhood and the early teenage years. The more moles a person has equates to a greater risk for the occurrence of melanoma.

Microsurgery

The microsurgical procedures performed at the Melbourne Institute of Plastic Surgery include the transfer of abdominal tissue for breast reconstruction after mastectomy, the transfer of tissue to cover large wounds resulting from major trauma, and the re-attachment of severed body parts such as fingers, thumbs, limbs, and ears.

Types of Skin Cancer

The most common cancer in Australia is skin cancer. Australia holds the unwanted title of one of the highest rates of skin cancer prevalence in the world. There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and melanoma. Surgical intervention is generally required combined with ongoing skin checks and monitoring.

Trigger Finger Release

A trigger finger is a condition experienced as a locking or clicking finger or thumb when flexed and extended. This is due to the tendon being too big for the sheath within the finger or thumb, creating pain and often a tender nodule at the site of triggering. Trigger finger release surgery aims to release this sheath that acts as a pulley, allowing the tendon to glide smoothly.

Hand Trauma

Trauma to the hand and wrist can involve lacerations, fractures, amputations or a combination. This procedure aims to repair the injury where possible to bring relief and optimize the best outcome for the patient. Options include laceration repair, tendon repair, nerve and artery repair, fixation of fractures with pins, screws or plates.

Ganglion Removal

A ganglion or synovial cyst is a soft tissue lump that can occur around the joints and tendons of the hand, wrist and feet. This is thought to be caused by a distention of a weakened portion of a joint capsule or tendon sheath. These ganglia can persist, or spontaneously resolve. Ganglion removal aims to remove the ganglion from the location either through surgical and non-surgical options, depending on the location and severity.

Dupuytrens Disease

Dupuytren’s disease is a genetic condition involving a fixed contracture of the hand which results in the inability to straighten the fingers, often the two smallest fingers. Tight bands develop in the palm and/or fingers which progressively cause the fingers to curl inwards. This can cause pain, and in severe cases skin hygiene problems.

Carpal Tunnel Release Surgery

Carpal tunnel syndrome results from nerve compression at the wrist which can cause pain and discomfort. The median nerve is found near the tendons that flex the thumb and fingers and is held down by a tight ligament over the wrist bone.

Rhinoplasty Nose Surgery

This surgery aims to improve the appearance and shape of the nose to create harmony among all the facial features.

Blepharoplasty Eyelid Surgery

A surgical procedure that can tighten the skin around the eyes for a more youthful appearance. Blepharoplasty may even improve vision for those whose eyelids are drooping low enough to interfere with their eyesight.

Browlift Surgery

A surgical procedure that raises drooping eyebrows, improving heaviness from the upper eyelids and helps to reduce frown lines. The skin of the forehead is lifted and smoothed, and the muscles that cause wrinkles are adjusted.

Chin Profile Alteration

A surgical procedure that performed through a small incision, usually placed under the chin, resulting in a small scar and often transient numbness to the lower lip/chin area.

Endoscopic Brow Lift

A surgical procedure that removes excess fat deposits from specific areas of the body to improve body contour and achieve a more sculpted appearance.

Facelift Surgery

A surgical procedure that aims to smooth the texture of your facial skin and reshape the underlying facial tissues. This is done by removing excess fat, tightening underlying muscles and redraping the skin of the face and neck.

Facial Trauma

A surgical procedure that aims to improve appearance and restore function to your facial muscles, minimising the long-term impact such accidents can have.

Lateral Temporal Lift

A surgical procedure that reduces excess skin and creases around the eyes.

Neck Lift

A surgical procedure that rejuvenates and enhances the neck, creating a smoother, more youthful contour from the face to the chest.

Otoplasty/Ear Pinning

A surgical procedure that aims to make the ears appear less prominent and give the ears a more natural appearance.

Post-Traumatic Deformities

A surgical procedure that aims improve post-traumatic deformities using special tools and techniques.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a procedure which involves placing an implant either behind the breast tissue or under the muscle on the chest wall.

Mastopexy

Also known as a breast lift, a mastopexy is a procedure which aims to improve the shape of the breast without altering the size.

Breast Reduction

Also known as a reduction mammoplasty, a breast reduction is a procedure which aims to reduce breast size and create a more ideal breast shape for the woman.

Gynaecomastia

A surgical procedure that removes excess fat deposits from specific areas of the body to improve body contour and achieve a more sculpted appearance.

Breast Asymmetry

Breast asymmetry refers to a difference between the two breasts, which can range from relatively minor to prominent. Differences might involve either one or more factors, including the size, volume, contour or position of the breast, as well as the positioning of the nipples and areolas.

Abdominoplasty

More commonly known as a tummy tuck, abdominoplasty is a cosmetic and functional procedure, which assists in removing excess skin and tightening the muscles around the abdominal area.

Body Contouring

Also known as a body lift, body contouring surgery includes various procedures to assist in removing and tightening excess skin in the waist, abdomen, thighs, buttocks, upper torso and upper arms.

Liposuction

Liposuction is a procedure that aims to eradicate fatty tissue from those areas that have been resistant to your weight loss efforts.
